Princes Club, London – King of Cable 2006 took place on the 23rd of September, featuring top UK riders all vying for the ultimate title of King and Queen of Cable. The competition has been running for a few years now and with a growing number of competitors and sponsors getting involved its gets bigger and better every time. This year we topped it all with a cash prize of £1000 and loads of prizes and goodies from the sponsors. This is a great way to end the season, with the riders having the opportunity to show off just how much they’ve improved over the last couple of months and hopefully, a good starting point for them next year.
The event consisted of 7 divisions, Boys - Born 1991 and after, Girls – 1991 and after, Junior Men – 1987 – 1990, Junior Ladies – 1987- 1990, Open Men – No Age Restriction, Open ladies – No Age Restriction, Master Men – 1975 or before.
It was an early start to the day, with the mist still rolling off the lake and competitors half asleep. As predicted, there was a last minute rush to get the late entries signed up before the 9am deadline but once this was out the way it didn’t take long for the day and the riding to start hotting up as the riders whipped up a storm on the water.
The crowd started off small for the qualifying rounds, mostly dedicated family and friends, but with the promise of a warm, sunny day and lunchtime approaching there was a steady stream of spectators gathering. The laid back atmosphere was carried along as the music got louder and the drinks started flowing.
Cable wakeboarding has seen some rapid growth internationally over the past few years and the UK has some of the best wakeboarders in the world! So not only were the crowds treated to outstanding riding, but the public also had the opportunity to take to the water, with Princes’ second cable running and the main cable open for use during the rest period between qualifiers and finals.
The Finals kicked off with a bang! The girls are now landing tricks not seen at the beginning of the season, with the highlight of the Girls riding being Victoria Young claiming yet another big railey and landing a backroll for the first time!. This young lady is nearly 14 and landing tricks most men still can’t! Girls (and guys) watch out - Tor will soon be a force to reckon with! Soon after, it was the Boys opportunity to show what they’re made of – and these young men have started doing tricks that’ll give the older guys something to think about.
The crowd was anticipating a battle in the Junior men’s and Open men’s divisions, and they were not to be disappointed. The order of the finals was determined from the qualifying rounds with the person with the lowest score going first and the winner going last. The Junior men’s division has some of the most talented riders in the UK and within a couple of years they will be ruling the world of cable wakeboarding! These young men gave their all, throwing down tricks that might have seemed impossible a few years ago.
Nick Davies had the best run of them all with his huge inverts and stylish grabs, executing his famous double S bend to blind as well as one of the most stylish nuclear roll to blinds I’ve ever seen! They all had unbelievable wild card tricks with the highlight being Tom Goatman’s tripple S bend. He looked to have it nailed except for the last 180, not landing it this time, but I’m sure it won’t be long before it’s one more under his belt.
The Open Men’s was another closely fought contest with 2006 Nationals and Wakestock champion Jonty Green giving his all as usual. Jonty has been riding on the cable a lot more this year and it has clearly paid off. His newest trick is the ballsey front blind Mobe, a front flip with a blind 360 spin. He had landed it earlier in the morning and went for another attempt in the final, just missing out on the handle. Next in, Ashley Templeman gave Jonty a run for his money! This kid goes big, making some of the really technical tricks like the tweety bird and his clean and stylish blind judge look easy. It was a close decision for the judges with Jonty earning extra points for his slightly more tech tricks.
To make things a little more interesting this year, we decided to try out a new format that has never been done before. The winner of each of the girls and guys divisions would go up against each other to see who really is the best male and female wakeboarders of the day and be crowned King and Queen of the cable.
Ladies competing for overall title of Queen of Cable consisted of Victoria Young (Girls), Charlotte Crawley (Junior Ladies) and Steph Caller (Open Women). This was a great battle with Charlotte being a good overall rider, Steph a great rider on the rails and Victoria, the duchess of air tricks. In the end the superior air tricks won through with Victoria Young showing that being the youngest rider was by no means a disadvantage!
In the guys divisions Ben Cordery (Boys), Stuart Marston (Masters Men), Nick Davies (Junior Men) and Jonty Green (Open Men’s) were all winners of their categories. With them all in such great form it was going to be a close call with Nick Davies showed all the boys how it was done with big clean tricks, stylish grabs and stomping everything with ease, it was like he was born to ride the cable. He made sure that he would not be beaten!
Princes club would like to thank all the spectators, organisers, operators and judges for making it such a great day. Most of all, Princes club could not have done this without the help of all our sponsors which included Billabong, Relentless, Obey, Analog, Oakley, Xbox 360, Vans, Pro-Tec and Corona. Huge thanks to them all and hope to see them and you down here again really soon!
